Our Lady of Zion

In 1842, the church of Sant'Andrea delle Fratte in Rome became the site of a profound and miraculous event involving Marie Alphonse Ratisbonne, a wealthy French Jewish banker known for his staunch anti-Catholic sentiments. While visiting Rome, Ratisbonne was challenged by a Catholic friend to wear the Miraculous Medal and recite the Memorare prayer. Accepting the dare out of mockery, Ratisbonne's life was forever changed on January 20. While waiting inside the church, he suddenly experienced a blinding light. From this radiance emerged the Virgin Mary, appearing exactly as she is depicted on the Miraculous Medal—tall, majestic, and exuding immense grace, with rays of light streaming from her open hands.

Though the Virgin Mary did not speak a single word during the apparition, Ratisbonne later testified that he understood the entirety of the Catholic faith in an instant. With a gentle, maternal motion of her hand, she directed him to kneel. In that silent, overwhelming encounter, the veil of his former skepticism was lifted, and he experienced a miraculous and instantaneous conversion of heart. The profound spiritual clarity he received in those moments transformed him from a cynical unbeliever into a devoted faithful, found weeping with joy and reverence before the altar by his returning friend.

The apparition of Our Lady of Zion, which quickly received official Vatican approval, left a monumental legacy on the Church. Following his vision, Marie Alphonse Ratisbonne was baptized, ordained as a priest, and eventually joined his brother, Théodore, to establish the Congregation of Our Lady of Zion. This religious order was dedicated to praying for the Jewish people and fostering a deep, respectful relationship between Catholics and Jews. Today, the "Miracle of Ratisbonne" remains a powerful testament to the grace of the Miraculous Medal and the silent, transformative power of the Virgin Mary's intercession.
