Our Lady of Tinos
In the early 19th century, amidst the turbulent backdrop of the Greek War of Independence, a profound spiritual event unfolded on the island of Tinos, Greece. Culminating in 1823, the Virgin Mary appeared in a series of vivid visions to a humble nun named Sister Pelagia (now recognized as St. Pelagia) at the Kechrovouni convent. Bathed in radiant light, the Holy Virgin instructed Pelagia to locate a sacred, long-buried icon of the Annunciation and to oversee the construction of a magnificent church on that very spot. Mary's message was one of hope and divine instruction, urging the nun to share the revelation with the local bishop and community leaders so they could begin the excavation.
Guided by St. Pelagia’s visions, the faithful of Tinos began digging in the designated field. The search initially yielded the ruins of an ancient church and a dry well, but the true miracle occurred on January 30, 1823. As workers excavated the earth, a pickaxe struck a buried icon, splitting the wood but miraculously leaving the painted figures of the Virgin Mary and the Archangel Gabriel completely untouched. Accompanying this miraculous unearthing, the previously dry well suddenly sprang forth with fresh, healing water. This sacred icon, known as the Megalochari (Great Grace), was immediately recognized as a profound sign of divine favor and protection.
The discovery of Our Lady of Tinos had an immediate and lasting impact on the faithful, serving as a powerful spiritual catalyst and boosting the morale of the Greek people during their struggle for freedom. Fully approved by the Greek Orthodox Church, the site quickly transformed into the spiritual heart of Greece. Today, the majestic Church of Panagia Evangelistria stands over the site of the discovery, drawing hundreds of thousands of pilgrims annually. Many visitors crawl on their hands and knees from the port to the church as a sign of deep devotion, seeking the Virgin Mary's intercession for miraculous healings and finding enduring comfort in her maternal grace.
