Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii

The devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii stems from a profound mystical experience rather than a traditional physical apparition, centering on the dramatic conversion of Blessed Bartolo Longo. In the early 1870s, Longo, a former satanic priest who had returned to the Catholic faith, was walking through the desolate and impoverished valley of Pompeii. He was suddenly overcome with severe despair, tormented by the fear that his past sins were unforgivable and that his soul was still condemned. In the depths of his anguish, he experienced a powerful spiritual locution, hearing a voice that echoed a promise of the Virgin Mary: "If you seek salvation, promulgate the Rosary. This is Mary's own promise." Overwhelmed by a sudden sense of peace and divine mercy, Longo fell to his knees and vowed that he would not leave Pompeii until he had spread the devotion of the Holy Rosary.

To fulfill his promise, Longo brought a dilapidated painting of Our Lady of the Rosary to Pompeii. After the image was restored and presented for public veneration in 1876, a wave of extraordinary miracles and signs began to occur, confirming the Virgin Mary's presence and intercession. One of the earliest and most famous miracles involved a young girl named Clorinda Lucarelli, who was completely cured of severe, incurable epilepsy after her family promised to support the construction of Longo's new church. As news of these miraculous healings and spiritual conversions spread, the once-forgotten valley began to draw thousands of pilgrims seeking Mary's grace.

The lasting impact of Blessed Bartolo Longo’s experience and the subsequent miracles completely transformed Pompeii from a place of spiritual and physical desolation into a global beacon of faith. The small church he began building eventually grew into the magnificent Pontifical Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary of Pompeii, which now welcomes millions of pilgrims each year. The events of 1876 remain a powerful testament to the boundless mercy of God, the intercessory power of the Virgin Mary, and the profound spiritual healing found in the prayer of the Rosary.
