Our Lady of the Cape
The devotion to Our Lady of the Cape, located in Trois-Rivières, Canada, is rooted in a series of profound events that culminated in a remarkable miracle in 1888. The site had already been touched by the miraculous in 1879 with the "Miracle of the Ice Bridge," when parishioners prayed the rosary for a way to transport stones across the unfrozen St. Lawrence River to build a new church. Miraculously, thick ice formed out of season, allowing the stones to be moved. Years later, on June 22, 1888, the historic chapel was officially dedicated as a shrine to the Virgin Mary, setting the stage for an extraordinary supernatural event known as the "Prodigy of the Eyes."
On that evening, Blessed Father Frédéric Jansoone, along with the parish priest Father Luc Desilets and a layman named Pierre Lacroix, entered the small chapel to pray. As they knelt before the altar, they looked up at the statue of the Blessed Mother, which traditionally depicted her with her eyes cast downward. To their absolute astonishment, the statue’s eyes were wide open. The three men reported that her eyes appeared dark, lifelike, and filled with a profound, living expression of maternal love. Though the Virgin Mary spoke no words, this silent miracle lasted for several minutes. The visionaries experienced a deep sense of peace and awe, interpreting her open, watchful eyes as a powerful sign of her living presence and her attentive care for the faithful.
The lasting impact of the 1888 miracle transformed the site into a beacon of faith for North America. Father Frédéric Jansoone spent the rest of his life tirelessly promoting devotion to Our Lady of the Cape, drawing countless pilgrims to the site. Today, recognized as Canada's National Shrine to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the sanctuary welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Pilgrims continue to flock to Trois-Rivières to pray before the miraculous statue, seeking spiritual solace, physical healings, and the comforting assurance of the Blessed Mother's watchful gaze.
