Our Lady of Suyapa

In 1747, near the village of Suyapa just outside Tegucigalpa, Honduras, a humble laborer named Alejandro Colindres experienced a quiet but profound encounter with the divine. While resting in a field after a long day of clearing land, Colindres repeatedly felt a hard object beneath him. Though he tossed it aside in the dark to sleep comfortably, the object miraculously returned to the exact same spot. When morning broke, he discovered that the persistent object was not a mere stone, but a tiny, intricately carved cedar wood statue of the Virgin Mary, measuring barely six centimeters tall. Unlike other Marian apparitions characterized by spoken messages or radiant visions, Our Lady of Suyapa made her presence known through this miraculous, enduring physical manifestation, choosing to appear to the lowly and hardworking.

Colindres brought the diminutive image home, where it was placed on a simple family altar and venerated by locals for two decades. The devotion grew exponentially in 1768 following the first fully documented miracle, when a prominent military captain, Joseph de Celis, was instantly cured of a severe, terminal illness after praying to the Virgin of Suyapa. This remarkable healing sparked widespread veneration, transforming the tiny wooden figure into a powerful conduit of faith. Countless pilgrims began flocking to the site, reporting profound spiritual conversions, physical healings, and a deep sense of maternal comfort radiating from the small but spiritually monumental statue.

Today, Our Lady of Suyapa holds a deeply cherished place in the hearts of the Honduran people as their beloved Patroness. The site of her veneration in Tegucigalpa has grown into a magnificent National Shrine, the Basilica of Suyapa, which draws millions of faithful pilgrims each year, especially during her feast day in February. The enduring legacy of Alejandro Colindres's 1747 discovery reminds the faithful that the divine often appears in the most humble and unassuming forms, offering a lasting message of hope, protection, and enduring love to the people of Honduras and beyond.
