Our Lady of Sorrows (Castelpetroso)

In the rugged hills of Castelpetroso, Italy, in the year 1888, a profound spiritual event unfolded when two peasant women, Fabiana Cicchino and Serafina Valentino, were searching for a lost sheep. Drawn by a mysterious, radiant light emanating from a small cave, Fabiana approached and was met with a heartbreaking celestial vision. She beheld the Virgin Mary appearing as Our Lady of Sorrows. Unlike many other Marian apparitions, Mary did not speak; instead, she conveyed a powerful, silent message through her posture. She was kneeling in deep anguish, her heart pierced by seven swords, with her eyes raised to heaven and her arms open in an attitude of offering. At her feet lay the bloodied, lifeless body of Jesus. Serafina later witnessed the exact same sorrowful scene, cementing the shared experience of the two women and inviting the world to reflect on the shared suffering of Christ and His mother.

The silent plea for repentance and co-redemption quickly drew the attention of the faithful, accompanied by profound signs and miracles. Shortly after the initial visions, a miraculous spring of water emerged near the cave, which became the source of numerous documented physical and spiritual healings. The authenticity of the site was remarkably bolstered when the local bishop, Francesco Macarone Palmieri, visited the cave to investigate and personally witnessed the apparition himself. Another notable miracle involved a young boy named Augusto Acquaderni, who was cured of severe bone tuberculosis after using the miraculous water. This healing prompted his father to champion the construction of a shrine. Recognizing the undeniable spiritual fruits and the credibility of the witnesses, the Church officially granted the apparitions Bishop-Approved status.

Today, the apparition of Our Lady of Sorrows at Castelpetroso holds a deeply significant place in Catholic devotion. The site is now home to the magnificent Basilica Sanctuary of the Addolorata, a towering, neo-Gothic church built to honor the Virgin Mary's silent suffering and her maternal intercession. The apparitions left a lasting impact on the faithful, transforming the quiet Italian hillside into a major pilgrimage destination where thousands gather annually to seek solace, healing, and a deeper connection to the Passion of Christ. In recognition of its enduring spiritual importance, Pope Paul VI later declared Our Lady of Sorrows of Castelpetroso the principal patroness of the Molise region.
