Our Lady of Peñafrancia

The devotion to Our Lady of Peñafrancia in Naga City, Philippines, traces its origins to 1710 through the profound spiritual experience of Miguel Robles de Covarrubias. A seminarian studying in Manila, Miguel fell gravely ill and was on the brink of death. Holding tightly to a picture of Our Lady of Peñafrancia—a devotion originating from Spain—he experienced a powerful spiritual intervention and miraculous healing. Though not a traditional apparition where the Virgin Mary delivered public messages, Miguel’s intimate encounter with her intercession prompted him to make a solemn vow: if he recovered, he would build a shrine in her honor. True to his word, after his miraculous recovery and subsequent ordination as a priest in Naga City, he commissioned a local artisan to carve a wooden replica of the Marian image to share his devotion with the local people.

The creation of the image was immediately accompanied by extraordinary signs and miracles that captivated the local faithful. According to historical accounts, during the carving of the statue, a dog was killed so its blood could be used to stain the dark wood of the image. When the lifeless body of the dog was thrown into the nearby river, it miraculously came back to life and swam to the shore, an event witnessed by numerous astounded onlookers. This spectacular sign was only the beginning; soon, countless devotees began reporting miraculous healings, answered prayers, and divine protections after praying before the image of the Virgin, cementing the belief that Mary’s presence rested powerfully upon the site.

Today, the lasting impact of Miguel’s miraculous healing and the subsequent signs is immeasurable. The site in Naga City has grown into a revered Regional Shrine and Minor Basilica, serving as the spiritual heart of the Bicol region. The devotion has blossomed into one of the largest Marian pilgrimages in Asia, culminating every September in the grand Peñafrancia Festival. Millions of faithful devotees gather to honor their beloved "Ina" (Mother), carrying her image in a spectacular fluvial procession down the Naga River while chanting "Viva la Virgen!" The events of 1710 sparked a centuries-old legacy of faith that continues to define the spiritual and cultural identity of the Filipino people.
