It is important to clarify that Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro is not the site of a Marian apparition. Unlike Lourdes or Fatima, there were no supernatural visions, messages from the Virgin Mary, or associated miracles. Instead, the site is home to the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace (Basilique Notre-Dame de la Paix), one of the largest Christian churches in the world. The "visionary" in this context was not a religious seer, but rather Félix Houphouët-Boigny, the first President of Ivory Coast, who had a grand architectural and spiritual vision to build a monumental tribute to God and the Virgin Mary in his birthplace.

While there were no supernatural events, the creation of the basilica was a monumental undertaking driven by President Houphouët-Boigny’s personal devotion. Constructed between 1985 and 1989 and consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1990, the minor basilica was designed to rival St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. It features a towering dome, hundreds of massive columns, and breathtaking stained-glass windows. Pope John Paul II agreed to consecrate the magnificent structure on the specific condition that a hospital be built nearby to serve the poor, ensuring that this grand symbol of faith was paired with a tangible commitment to charity and healing.

Today, the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace stands as a profound symbol of Catholicism in West Africa. Even without the draw of an apparition or supernatural miracles, it has a lasting impact on the faithful as a center for prayer, pilgrimage, and national pride. It serves as a towering, physical prayer for peace in the region, embodying the dedication of its founder and standing as a breathtaking testament to the enduring presence of the Church in Africa.
