Our Lady of Mercy (Barcelona)

In the year 1218, during a perilous era when countless Christians were being captured and sold into slavery by Moorish forces, a profound spiritual event unfolded in Barcelona, Spain. St. Peter Nolasco, a devout and wealthy merchant, had already been exhausting his personal fortune to ransom enslaved Christians. On the night of August 1, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to him in a radiant vision, presenting herself as Our Lady of Mercy. According to historical tradition, this miraculous apparition was simultaneously experienced by King James I of Aragon and St. Raymond of Penyafort. In the vision, Mary expressed deep sorrow for the suffering of the captives and delivered a clear, urgent message: she asked St. Peter Nolasco to establish a religious order strictly dedicated to the ransom and liberation of enslaved Christians.

Moved by the Virgin Mary’s profound compassion and the miraculous synchronization of their visions, the three men acted swiftly. Just days later, on August 10, 1218, they founded the Royal and Military Order of Our Lady of Mercy of the Redemption of the Captives, commonly known as the Mercedarians. The true miracle of this apparition manifested in the extraordinary courage and success of the order. The Mercedarian friars took a unique fourth vow to offer their own lives and freedom in exchange for the captives if necessary. Over the centuries, inspired by Mary's mandate, the order successfully rescued tens of thousands of prisoners, transforming a moment of divine intervention into a monumental legacy of human liberation.

The lasting impact of the 1218 apparition deeply shaped the spiritual and cultural identity of the region. Our Lady of Mercy, or La Mercè, was eventually declared the co-patroness of Barcelona, and her protection is still celebrated annually with one of the city's largest festivals. Today, the site of her veneration is recognized as a Minor Basilica—the Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy in Barcelona. Pilgrims and the faithful continue to visit the basilica to honor the wooden image of the Virgin, seeking her intercession and remembering the profound message of mercy, freedom, and selfless love she delivered to St. Peter Nolasco over eight centuries ago.
