Our Lady of Liesse

In the 12th century, the remarkable story of Our Lady of Liesse unfolded when three French Crusader knights were captured and imprisoned by Saracens in Egypt. Facing immense pressure to renounce their Christian faith, the knights were visited in their dungeon by the Sultan's daughter, Ismeria, who had been sent to convert them to Islam. Instead, the knights spoke so beautifully of the Virgin Mary that Ismeria asked to see her image. According to pious tradition, angels miraculously delivered a radiant wooden statue of the Madonna and Child to the knights' cell. Accompanied by this miraculous image, the Virgin Mary manifested her presence, filling the dark prison with a heavenly light and a profound sense of peace. Moved by this divine encounter and the faith of the knights, Ismeria converted to Christianity and helped them plan their escape.

The apparition was immediately followed by a spectacular miracle of deliverance. Trusting entirely in the Virgin Mary's protection, the three knights and Ismeria fell asleep in their Egyptian prison, only to miraculously awaken the very next morning thousands of miles away in the tranquil countryside of Picardy, France. The sacred statue rested safely beside them. Recognizing the divine intervention that had carried them home, they established a shrine at the site of their miraculous arrival. The location came to be known as Liesse, an old French word meaning "joy," reflecting the profound gladness of their liberation and the spiritual joy brought by the Blessed Mother.

Over the centuries, the shrine of Our Lady of Liesse grew into one of France's most significant Marian pilgrimage destinations, drawing countless devotees, including French royalty, who sought solace, healing, and spiritual renewal. The miraculous story of the three Crusader knights and the converted princess established the site as a powerful symbol of Mary's maternal care and her ability to liberate captives. In recognition of its enduring spiritual importance, its rich history of miracles, and the continuous devotion of the faithful, the sanctuary was elevated to the status of a Minor Basilica. Today, the Basilica of Our Lady of Liesse remains a lasting testament to the miraculous joy and protective grace of the Virgin Mary.
