Our Lady of Laus

Between 1664 and 1718, the remote Alpine village of Saint-Étienne-le-Laus, France, became the site of one of the longest-running Marian apparitions in history. The visions began when Benoîte Rencurel, a humble and uneducated teenage shepherdess, encountered a beautiful, radiant lady while tending her flock. Over the course of an astonishing 54 years, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Benoîte, eventually guiding her to a small, dilapidated chapel in the valley. It was here that Mary revealed her divine purpose, instructing Benoîte that a larger sanctuary must be built to serve as a place of profound spiritual healing and the conversion of sinners.

The central message of Our Lady of Laus was a call to reconciliation and the Sacrament of Penance. To aid in this mission, Mary granted Benoîte the extraordinary mystical gift of reading souls, allowing the shepherdess to gently guide pilgrims toward sincere confession and repentance. The apparition site quickly became associated with remarkable signs and miracles. Most notably, pilgrims frequently reported experiencing the "sweet fragrance of Laus"—mysterious, heavenly perfumes that lingered in the air without any natural source. Additionally, the Virgin Mary promised that the oil from the sanctuary lamp would possess miraculous healing properties for both physical and spiritual ailments when applied with deep faith, leading to countless reported cures.

Today, Our Lady of Laus holds the esteemed status of being Vatican-approved, having received official recognition from the Church in 2008. The enduring legacy of Benoîte Rencurel’s lifelong encounters with the Virgin Mary has transformed Saint-Étienne-le-Laus into a cherished pilgrimage destination. Known affectionately as a "refuge for sinners," the sanctuary continues to draw the faithful from around the world, standing as a powerful testament to God's boundless mercy, the grace of conversion, and the comforting, enduring presence of the Blessed Mother.
