Our Lady of Šiauliai (Hill of Crosses)

The origins of the devotion to Our Lady of Šiauliai at the Hill of Crosses are deeply intertwined with the suffering and resilience of the Lithuanian people following the November Uprising of 1831. While it is not a traditional apparition site with lengthy spoken messages, local tradition holds that the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared on the hill holding the Infant Jesus during a time of profound national grief. Her luminous presence served as a powerful, silent directive to the faithful. She encouraged the grieving Lithuanian Catholics to place crosses on the hill as a way to honor the fallen rebels whose bodies could not be recovered, and to pray for the deliverance of their nation and the preservation of their Catholic faith against oppressive imperial forces.

The site quickly became associated with profound signs and miracles. According to one of the most famous early accounts, a desperate father whose daughter was gravely ill received a vision instructing him to carve a wooden cross and carry it to the hill. Upon fulfilling this arduous act of faith, he returned home to find his daughter miraculously healed. Word of this miraculous cure, along with the deep spiritual comfort the visions provided, sparked a massive movement among the faithful. Pilgrims began traveling from all over the region to plant crosses of every size and material, transforming the barren mound into a towering, intricate forest of crucifixes.

Today, the Hill of Crosses stands as a globally recognized Pilgrimage Site and a monumental testament to the unbreakable spirit of Lithuanian Catholics. The lasting impact of Mary’s comforting presence is most evident in the site's survival; despite repeated attempts by Soviet authorities to bulldoze and burn the hill during the 20th century, the faithful continuously rebuilt it, bravely planting new crosses under the cover of night. The profound spiritual significance of the site was universally affirmed in 1993 when Pope John Paul II visited to pray, declaring the Hill of Crosses a place of hope, peace, and love, and forever honoring the enduring faith that Our Lady inspired.
