Our Lady of Good Help (Champion)

In October 1859, a young Belgian immigrant named Adele Brise experienced a profound spiritual encounter in the wilderness of Champion, Wisconsin. While walking along a wooded trail, Adele saw a radiant woman clothed in dazzling white, wearing a yellow sash around her waist and a crown of stars upon her head. Though the figure remained silent during the first two encounters, Adele sought the counsel of her parish priest, who advised her to ask the woman her identity if she appeared again. During the third apparition, the luminous figure finally spoke, revealing herself with the words, "I am the Queen of Heaven, who prays for the conversion of sinners, and I wish you to do the same."

The Blessed Virgin Mary entrusted Adele with a specific and urgent mission: to gather the children of this untamed pioneer country and teach them what they needed to know for their salvation. Mary instructed her to teach the local youth their catechism, how to make the sign of the cross, and how to approach the sacraments. Despite her own lack of formal education and the physical hardships of the frontier, Adele faithfully dedicated the rest of her life to this calling. She traveled tirelessly throughout the Wisconsin peninsula to educate children, eventually establishing a Catholic school and a convent on the very site of the apparitions.

The shrine later became the center of a remarkable miracle during the Great Peshtigo Fire of 1871, the deadliest wildfire in recorded history. As the inferno consumed the surrounding landscape, Adele and local families sought refuge within the chapel grounds, praying the rosary and carrying a statue of Mary in procession. Miraculously, the fire stopped exactly at the perimeter of the five-acre property, leaving the wooden chapel untouched and all those inside completely unharmed. Today, the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help holds profound spiritual significance; having received official Bishop approval in 2010, it stands as the first and only recognized Marian apparition site in the United States, continuing to draw thousands of faithful pilgrims seeking peace, healing, and spiritual renewal.
