Our Lady of Good Health (Velankanni)

In the 16th century, the coastal town of Velankanni, India, became the site of profound spiritual encounters that would forever change the region. According to local traditions, the first apparition involved a young Hindu shepherd boy resting near a pond. The Virgin Mary appeared to him in radiant light, holding the Christ Child, and requested some milk for her son. After the boy obliged, he returned to his master only to discover that his partially emptied pitcher was miraculously overflowing with milk. A few years later, Mary appeared again, this time to a crippled boy selling buttermilk. After he offered his drink to the Mother and Child, Mary instructed him to go to a nearby town and ask a Catholic gentleman to build a chapel in her honor. As the boy stood up to deliver the message, he realized his crippled legs had been completely and miraculously healed.

The devotion to Our Lady of Good Health was further cemented by a dramatic miracle at sea in the following century. A Portuguese merchant ship sailing in the Bay of Bengal was caught in a violent, life-threatening storm. The desperate sailors prayed to the Virgin Mary, vowing to build a church in her honor wherever they safely landed. Miraculously, the storm calmed, and the ship washed ashore at Velankanni on September 8th, the Feast of the Nativity of Mary. True to their word, the sailors transformed the humble thatched chapel built by the locals into a permanent stone structure, dedicating it to Our Lady of Good Health.

Today, the sanctuary in Velankanni stands as a monumental beacon of faith, widely revered as the "Lourdes of the East." Elevated to the official Church status of a Minor Basilica, the site draws millions of pilgrims annually. Its significance transcends religious boundaries, as people of various faiths travel from across the globe to seek physical healing, offer prayers of gratitude, and experience the profound peace of the shrine. The enduring legacy of these 16th-century apparitions continues to offer hope, unity, and comfort to the faithful.
