Our Lady of Good Counsel (Genazzano)
In the small town of Genazzano, Italy, the miraculous event of Our Lady of Good Counsel unfolded in 1467, not through a traditional spoken apparition, but through a profound and visible miracle witnessed by the local community. On April 25, during the festival of St. Mark, the townspeople were gathered near an unfinished Augustinian church. According to tradition, sweet music suddenly filled the air, and a mysterious, luminous cloud descended from the sky, settling upon the incomplete walls of the sanctuary. As the cloud gradually dissipated, the awe-struck community discovered a beautiful, delicate fresco of the Virgin Mary tenderly holding the Child Jesus, which had not been there moments before.
The sudden appearance of the image was accompanied by extraordinary signs that captivated the faithful. The fresco, painted on a paper-thin layer of plaster, appeared to be miraculously suspended without any physical support against the unfinished wall. Word quickly spread that the sacred image had been miraculously transported by angels from a church in Scutari, Albania, to protect it from an impending invasion. While Mary did not deliver a spoken message, her action of bringing this image to Genazzano was received as a profound declaration of her maternal presence and protection. Almost immediately, the site became a focal point for divine grace, with the local community reporting numerous miraculous healings, conversions, and answered prayers in the presence of the holy image.
The miraculous arrival of Our Lady of Good Counsel left an indelible mark on the Catholic world, transforming the humble Italian town into a major center of Marian devotion. The unfinished church was swiftly completed and established as a prominent Augustinian Shrine, which continues to house and protect the miraculous fresco today. Over the centuries, the shrine has drawn countless pilgrims—including numerous popes and saints—seeking the Blessed Mother's wisdom and guidance. The enduring legacy of the 1467 event serves as a powerful, lasting reminder of Mary's tender care and her perpetual role as a source of divine counsel for all who seek her intercession.
