Our Lady of Gietrzwałd

In 1877, the small village of Gietrzwałd, Poland, became the site of a profound spiritual event when the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to two young girls, Justyna and Barbara. The apparitions began when Justyna saw a brilliant light and a beautiful figure seated on a throne with the Infant Jesus, surrounded by angels, above a maple tree near the local church. Soon after, Barbara also witnessed the same majestic vision. When the girls asked the radiant figure who she was, she replied, "I am the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Immaculate Conception."

During the series of apparitions, Our Lady delivered a simple yet powerful message, notably speaking to the girls in their native Polish dialect—a profound comfort during a time when the Polish language and Catholic faith were facing severe political suppression. She urged the visionaries and the faithful to pray the Rosary daily, promising that through fervent prayer, the Church would be protected and the trials facing the people would ease. As a lasting sign of her presence and grace, Mary blessed a local spring of water. Pilgrims who drank from and washed in this spring soon reported numerous miraculous healings and deep spiritual conversions.

The events at Gietrzwałd hold a unique and monumental place in Catholic history, as it remains the only Vatican-approved Marian apparition in Poland. The apparitions sparked a massive religious and national revival among the Polish people, drawing hundreds of thousands of pilgrims to the village even amidst strict political oppression. Today, the Shrine of Our Lady of Gietrzwałd stands as a beacon of hope and faith, continuing to draw countless believers who seek the intercession, healing, and peace promised by the Virgin Mary over a century ago.
