Our Lady of Cuapa

In 1980, against the backdrop of deep civil unrest and violence in Nicaragua, a humble sacristan named Bernardo Martínez experienced a profound spiritual encounter in the small village of Cuapa. The events began when Bernardo noticed a strange, supernatural illumination emanating from the local chapel. Shortly after, he witnessed the Virgin Mary appearing above a pile of stones in a nearby pasture. Radiating a gentle, heavenly light, she presented herself with her hands joined in prayer, holding a rosary over her heart, and spoke to Bernardo with immense maternal tenderness.

During her apparitions, Our Lady of Cuapa delivered a poignant message centered on peace, prayer, and reconciliation. She urged the faithful to pray the Rosary daily, specifically asking that it be accompanied by biblical readings, and emphasized the importance of renewing the Five First Saturdays devotion. In a striking and emotional moment, Mary wept over the violence tearing the country apart, instructing Bernardo, "Do not ask for peace without making peace." She also granted him profound visions, including scenes of early Christian martyrs and future generations, illustrating the enduring power of faith and the necessity of forgiveness amidst suffering.

The apparitions of Our Lady of Cuapa left a lasting spiritual legacy, offering a beacon of hope to the Nicaraguan people during one of their darkest historical chapters. The local Church thoroughly investigated the events, and the apparitions were officially approved by the local bishop, affirming their supernatural character and spiritual fruitfulness. Bernardo Martínez, deeply transformed by his encounters with the Blessed Mother, later pursued a vocation to the priesthood, dedicating the rest of his life to spreading her enduring message of peace, active reconciliation, and unwavering faith.
