Our Lady of Coromoto

In the lush region of Guanare, Venezuela, a profound spiritual encounter unfolded in 1652 that would forever shape the faith of a nation. The Virgin Mary, now revered as Our Lady of Coromoto, appeared to Chief Coromoto of the local Cospes tribe. According to tradition, the radiant Virgin first appeared to the Chief and his wife near a stream, speaking to them in their native tongue. Her message was one of salvation and grace; she gently instructed the Chief and his people to seek out the Christian missionaries so they could be baptized and brought into the Christian faith.

Despite this heavenly visitation, Chief Coromoto hesitated, fearing the loss of his tribal authority, and retreated to his village. On September 8, 1652, the Virgin Mary appeared a second time, materializing inside the Chief's humble hut surrounded by a brilliant, glowing aura. Startled and defensive, Chief Coromoto lunged forward to grab the apparition and force her out. In that very instant, the Virgin vanished, leaving behind a miraculous sign in his clenched fist: a tiny, intricately detailed parchment—measuring barely an inch tall—bearing the image of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child.

This miraculous relic became the catalyst for a profound spiritual transformation. Deeply moved by the undeniable sign, Chief Coromoto eventually embraced the faith, leading to the baptism and peaceful conversion of his entire tribe. Today, Our Lady of Coromoto is celebrated as the beloved Patroness of Venezuela. The site of these extraordinary events in Guanare has been elevated to the status of a Minor Basilica—the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Coromoto. There, the original miraculous parchment is still preserved, serving as a beacon of hope and drawing countless pilgrims who come to venerate the Virgin's enduring presence.
