Our Lady of Charity (El Cobre)

In 1612, off the shores of the Bay of Nipe near El Cobre, Cuba, three young fishermen—traditionally remembered as the "Three Juans" (two Indigenous brothers and an enslaved African boy)—found themselves caught in a violent, life-threatening storm. Fearing for their lives in their small boat, they prayed fervently for divine protection. As the skies suddenly cleared and the turbulent waters calmed, the fishermen witnessed a remarkable sight. Floating toward them on the gentle waves was a small wooden statue of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, fastened securely to a wooden board.

When the fishermen pulled the sacred image from the water, they experienced a profound miracle: despite having been tossed in the ocean during a fierce tempest, the statue and its delicate cloth garments were completely dry. Carved into the wooden board beneath her feet was a simple but powerful declaration: "Yo soy la Virgen de la Caridad" (I am the Virgin of Charity). While there were no spoken words or ongoing visions, this miraculous arrival and the physical preservation of the statue served as a profound message of the Blessed Mother's enduring protection, maternal care, and solidarity with the humble and the oppressed.

The discovery of Our Lady of Charity left an indelible mark on the faithful, ultimately transforming the spiritual landscape of Cuba. The miraculous statue was brought to the copper mining town of El Cobre, where a sanctuary was eventually built to honor her. Today, the site holds the prestigious status of a Minor Basilica and serves as the National Shrine of Cuba. As the beloved patroness of the Cuban people, Our Lady of Charity draws countless pilgrims who travel to El Cobre seeking her intercession, healing, and comfort, making her a lasting symbol of faith, hope, and national unity.
