Our Lady of Candelaria
In the early 1400s, along the rugged coast of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, two indigenous Guanche shepherds experienced a profound and miraculous encounter. While herding their flocks near a ravine in Candelaria, their sheep suddenly refused to move forward. Investigating the cause, the shepherds discovered a mysterious, lifelike wooden statue of a beautiful woman holding a child in her right arm and a green candle in her left. Though the Guanche people had not yet been introduced to Christianity, they were immediately struck by the majestic and otherworldly presence of the figure, sensing that she was a divine entity worthy of immense reverence.
The encounter was accompanied by immediate and striking miracles. Believing the figure might be a living intruder, one shepherd attempted to throw a stone at her, but his arm instantly became paralyzed. The second shepherd drew his knife to strike the statue, but miraculously ended up cutting his own hand instead. Terrified and awestruck, they fled to their local king, who ordered them to return and retrieve the figure. The moment the injured shepherds respectfully touched the statue to carry it, their wounds and paralysis were instantly healed. This undeniable sign of divine power and mercy led the Guanche people to venerate her deeply, initially honoring her in a sacred cave as "Chaxiraxi," the Mother of the Sun.
Following the Spanish arrival, the miraculous figure was identified as the Virgin Mary, specifically Our Lady of Candelaria. The discovery of the statue and its associated miracles served as a peaceful, providential bridge between the indigenous Guanche culture and the Christian faith. Today, the enduring impact of this encounter is visible in the deep devotion of the faithful. Our Lady of Candelaria was declared the Patroness of the Canary Islands, and the site where she is venerated has been elevated to the status of a Minor Basilica. It remains a major spiritual center, drawing countless pilgrims who come to honor the Virgin's miraculous intercession and lasting maternal protection.
