Our Lady of Betania
Between 1976 and 1988, the lush, tropical landscape of Betania, Venezuela, became the site of profound spiritual encounters when the Virgin Mary appeared to María Esperanza, a deeply devout woman already known for her extraordinary mystical gifts. First appearing on March 25, 1976, the Blessed Mother introduced herself as "Mary, Virgin and Mother, Reconciler of all Peoples and Nations." María Esperanza described the Virgin as a beautiful figure radiating a brilliant, heavenly light. These sacred encounters were often preceded by gentle, natural signs, such as the sudden, inexplicable scent of roses or the fluttering of a vibrant blue butterfly just before the apparition manifested.
The apparitions were accompanied by extraordinary miracles and urgent messages for humanity. The Virgin Mary imparted words emphasizing the critical need for global reconciliation, brotherly love, and a return to the Sacraments, urging humanity to seek peace and turn back to God. The site became renowned for profound supernatural phenomena, most notably on March 25, 1984, when the apparition was witnessed not just by María Esperanza, but by over 100 people gathered at the site. These witnesses—ranging from young children to educated skeptics—reported seeing the Virgin Mary clearly. Many also testified to experiencing "miracles of the sun" similar to those at Fatima, where the sun appeared to spin and change colors, alongside the sound of unseen heavenly choirs.
The events at Betania left an indelible mark on the faithful and the broader Catholic Church. Following a rigorous investigation involving psychological evaluations and extensive witness testimonies, Bishop Pío Bello Ricardo officially declared the apparitions authentic in 1987, granting them full Church approval. Today, Betania remains a vibrant sanctuary of peace and a major pilgrimage destination, drawing thousands who seek spiritual healing and reconciliation. The legacy of these apparitions endures through the life of María Esperanza, whose cause for canonization is currently underway, and through the timeless Marian call for unity and love among all nations.
