Our Lady of Šaštín

The origins of the devotion to Our Lady of Šaštín trace back to a profound spiritual encounter in 1564 in the town of Šaštín-Stráže, Slovakia. The key figure, a noblewoman named Angelika Bakičová, was enduring a severe marital crisis due to the cruelty and volatile temper of her husband, Count Imrich Czobor. According to the tradition, after being violently thrown from her husband's carriage during a dispute, a desperate and heartbroken Angelika fell to her knees. In her moment of deepest anguish, she experienced a powerful spiritual connection with the Blessed Mother. She fervently prayed to the Virgin Mary for her husband’s conversion and the healing of their marriage, promising to commission a sacred image in Mary's honor if her plea was answered.

The Virgin Mary’s response was not delivered through spoken words, but through a swift and miraculous transformation of the heart. Shortly after Angelika’s tearful prayer, her husband experienced a sudden, inexplicable remorse. He returned to her, begged for forgiveness, and their marriage was completely restored in harmony and love. To fulfill her vow, a grateful Angelika commissioned a wooden statue of Our Lady of Sorrows—depicting Mary holding the lifeless body of Jesus (the Pietà)—and had it placed at the very crossroads where her prayers had been answered.

Almost immediately, the site became a beacon of divine grace. The faithful who gathered to pray before the statue began reporting extraordinary miracles, including unexplained physical healings, protection during times of war, and profound spiritual conversions. The lasting impact of Angelika’s answered prayer is immeasurable; the devotion grew so deeply rooted in the region that Our Lady of Sorrows was eventually declared the principal patroness of Slovakia. Today, the magnificent basilica built to house the miraculous statue holds the prestigious status of a National Shrine, drawing thousands of pilgrims each year who seek the Blessed Mother's intercession for family reconciliation, healing, and peace.
