Our Lady of Antipolo

The devotion to Our Lady of Antipolo, also known as Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, is rooted in a series of miraculous events that captivated the faithful in the Philippines. Brought to the country from Mexico by Governor Juan Niño de Tabora, the dark wooden statue was entrusted to the local church in Antipolo around 1632 following the Governor's death. Shortly after its arrival, the community experienced a profound and inexplicable sign: the statue mysteriously vanished from its church altar on multiple occasions. Each time a search was mounted, the image was discovered resting high in the branches of a native Tipolo (breadfruit) tree.

While this was not a traditional apparition with spoken words, the faithful and the local clergy clearly understood the Virgin Mary’s silent message. They interpreted her repeated relocations as a divine request to build her shrine exactly where the tree stood. Honoring her wishes, the church was relocated, and the trunk of the very Tipolo tree was carved to serve as the permanent pedestal for the miraculous image. In the years that followed, the miracles multiplied. The Virgin Mary became renowned for her protective presence, famously granting safe passage to the Manila-Acapulco galleons, shielding them from fierce storms, pirate attacks, and shipwrecks across the Pacific Ocean.

Today, the lasting impact of these 17th-century miracles is deeply woven into the cultural and spiritual fabric of the Philippines. The church in Antipolo, recognized as a National Shrine, stands as a monumental beacon of faith. Millions of pilgrims visit the shrine annually, most notably during the Alay Lakad (Walk Offering) in May, where devotees walk for miles overnight to seek the Blessed Mother's intercession for safe travels, peace, and guidance. The miraculous signs that began in the branches of a simple tree in 1632 have blossomed into one of the most enduring and vibrant Marian devotions in the world.
