Our Lady of Altötting

In 1489, in the Bavarian town of Altötting, Germany, a profound event transformed a small local chapel into a beacon of faith. Unlike traditional Marian apparitions that feature spoken messages or extended visions, the story of Our Lady of Altötting centers on a powerful, miraculous intervention. According to the tradition, a three-year-old boy had tragically drowned in the local river. Overcome with grief and refusing to give up hope, his desperate mother carried his lifeless body to the Gnadenkapelle (Chapel of Grace) and laid him before a revered wooden statue of the Black Madonna.

Pleading for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother and other faithful gathered in fervent prayer. The Virgin Mary responded not with an apparition of spoken words, but with a profound act of grace: the drowned boy miraculously returned to life. This astonishing resurrection was quickly followed by a second documented miracle that same year, in which another child, crushed by a heavy wagon, was also revived after prayers were offered to Our Lady of Altötting. These undeniable signs of Mary’s maternal care and intercessory power spread rapidly, establishing the statue as a miraculous conduit of divine grace.

Today, Our Lady of Altötting stands as Germany’s premier National Shrine, drawing over a million pilgrims annually. The Chapel of Grace remains the spiritual heart of the sanctuary, its exterior and interior walls completely covered with thousands of painted votive tablets—each a personal testament to prayers answered and miracles granted through Mary's intercession over the centuries. Visited by popes and countless faithful, the shrine continues to be a profound place of healing, hope, and enduring devotion.
