Our Lady of Altagracia

The devotion to Our Lady of Altagracia in Higüey, Dominican Republic, is rooted in a rich tapestry of history and miraculous legend dating back to the early 16th century. According to historical accounts intertwined with the Alonzo de Ojeda tradition, the sacred portrait of the Virgin Mary was brought to the island by early Spanish settlers. However, the most beloved local account tells of a pious merchant from Higüey whose daughter earnestly requested an image of the Virgin of Altagracia. After searching unsuccessfully in Santo Domingo, the merchant was approached at an inn by a mysterious, elderly pilgrim. The stranger gifted him the beautiful painting of the Virgin and child before vanishing without a trace, an event many faithful believe was an angelic intervention.

Upon returning to Higüey, the merchant presented the sacred image to his family, but they soon began to experience a profound and recurring miracle. Each night, the painting would mysteriously disappear from the safety of their home, only to be found the following morning resting peacefully in the branches of a nearby orange tree. The community interpreted this miraculous sign not as a spoken message, but as a clear, silent directive from the Blessed Mother. Through this continuous manifestation, the Virgin Mary was indicating her desire to remain outdoors among the people and requesting that a sanctuary be built on that exact spot.

In response to these miraculous events, the faithful constructed the first shrine on the site of the orange tree, which was completed in 1572. Today, Our Lady of Altagracia is deeply revered as the Protector and Spiritual Mother of the Dominican Republic. The humble origins of her veneration have since blossomed into a monumental Minor Basilica—the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia—which stands on the sacred grounds in Higüey. The enduring legacy of the mysterious pilgrim and the miracles of the orange tree continue to draw millions of pilgrims annually, uniting the Dominican people in profound faith and lifelong devotion to the Virgin Mary.
