Our Lady of Akita

In 1973, in the city of Akita, Japan, a remarkable series of spiritual events unfolded around Sister Agnes Sasagawa, a deaf nun belonging to the Institute of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. The phenomena began when Sister Agnes received a cross-shaped, bleeding wound on her left hand, causing her immense pain. Shortly after, a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary in the convent's chapel became illuminated, and Sister Agnes—despite her deafness—heard a beautiful voice speaking to her from the figure. Over the following years, the statue exhibited profound miraculous signs: a cross-shaped wound appeared on its right hand, it perspired heavily while emitting a sweet floral fragrance, and it wept human tears 101 times. This weeping phenomenon was witnessed by hundreds of people, including scientists and the local bishop, and was even broadcast on national Japanese television.

During these visitations, the Blessed Virgin Mary delivered three profound and sobering messages to Sister Agnes. The messages emphasized the urgent need for prayer, penance, and the daily recitation of the Rosary to make amends for the sins of humanity. Our Lady of Akita warned of a severe global chastisement—described as fire falling from the sky that would wipe out a large part of humanity—if people did not repent and amend their lives. Furthermore, the Virgin prophesied a deep crisis and division within the Church, warning of a time when "cardinals will oppose cardinals, bishops will oppose bishops," and the Church would be full of those who accept compromises. She urged the faithful to remain steadfast in their devotion and to pray fervently for the Pope, bishops, and priests.

The events of Our Lady of Akita have left a profound and lasting impact on the Catholic faithful worldwide, often being compared to the apparitions at Fatima due to their prophetic weight. Alongside the weeping statue, miraculous healings were recorded, including the complete and permanent restoration of Sister Agnes's hearing and the curing of a woman with a terminal brain tumor. After extensive investigation, the local ordinary, Bishop John Shojiro Ito, officially approved the supernatural character of the events in 1984, declaring them worthy of belief. Today, the shrine in Akita remains a solemn place of pilgrimage, drawing believers who seek to heed Mary's call for repentance, prayer, and unwavering faith in the face of global and spiritual trials.
